It saddens me to read the news about a Taiwanese student protester who committed suicide this morning. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/…/student-prote…/2018860.html
Whether he wanted to become a martyr on his birthday or he just couldn't take it anymore due to unbearable depression, I was "impressed" by the immediate presumption, "His suicidal decision should have nothing to do with the protest", released by the chief of the Education Department (of New Taipei City Government) right after his death.

Is there anything wrong in our educational system? Please allow me to share some personal experience,
1. After PRC(the government in China) had ruled the mainland China for over 50 years, my history and geography textbooks still taught us that mainland China belongs to ROC(the government in Taiwan). I only learned that Mongolia was not part of China after a conversation with a Chinese student during a visit in the mainland in 99.
2. My very first Taiwan-focused(titled) history class came to me as an optional credit when I was in college.
3. After having access to online information written in a few languages, I finally knew that the ROC didn't quit its position from the UN, and it was actually that the ROC was expelled by the UN.
4. Learning it's OK to have "Double Standard". My history book told me how horrible the massacre was during Jun 4th Incident (Tien-An-Men Square) done by PRC, but the same history book did not want to give us details of how ROC came to murder (and kidnap) its own people.
Accepting Double Standard is the worst! If there is a problem calling Mandarin (pronunciation) as Chinese (language), there should also be a problem calling the dialect Hō-ló-oē(Minnan or Hokkien) as Taiwanese since there are other non related dialects widely spoken in Taiwan.
I had a feeling that our government, all my teachers, and all the grown ups knew what I learned from school was not always true. We'd tolerated it for so long because of the fear for lives or the fear for failing the school system(Any updated information could turn into more study for exams). For decades, having high scores at school is equal to a bright future.
For this generation of students who have witnessed that our educated lies and selective memory didn't bring us better lives, of course they would like to try to finally learn the truth?
Why not?
